MILES DAVIS: BIRTH OF THE COOL Anthem

One of the towering figures of 20th-century music, the jazz trumpeter and composer Miles Davis was the personification of cool, from his dark shades to his stylish clothes — even the way he stood on the stage as he blew his horn. Precisely because of his sleek image and enigmatic personality, Davis has eluded the kind of major documentary portrait that he deserves. Until now.

In this deeply researched, deftly constructed and uncompromisingly honest biography, master filmmaker Stanley Nelson (THE BLACK PANTHERS: VANGUARD OF THE REVOLUTION) unpacks the Miles mystique. Nelson gives us the whole man — the son, the friend, the lover, as well as the brilliantly inventive musician who displayed his genius one note at a time.

Stanley Nelson is a Peabody Award-winning, veteran documentary filmmaker and a Macarthur “genius” Fellow known as a director, writer and producer of documentaries examining African American history and experiences. He is a recipient of the 2013 National Humanities Medal from President Obama. He was the 2015 AFI DOCS Charles Guggenheim honoree, and currently sits on the AFI DOCS Advisory Board.
