MAIDEN Portrait

30 years ago, the first all-female crew to compete in the Whitbread Round the World Race set sail on the race’s opening leg. The long shot dream of Tracy Edwards, the Maiden’s indefatigable 24-year-old skipper, was becoming a reality.

Facing nearly insurmountable obstacles, before and during the race, the crew was given virtually no shot by the male-dominated sailing community of finishing the race, let alone winning it. But by the end of Maiden’s 167-day, 32,018-mile journey, records — and glass ceilings — had been shattered. In this thrilling account of the Maiden’s historic voyage, riveting archival footage combines with fascinating interviews with Edwards and her crew to tell the story of the voyage that changed the sailing world forever.
