RADIOGRAPH OF A FAMILY Feature Films In Person at AFI Silver

RADIOGRAPH

Following the screening, watch a special conversation with director Firouzeh Khosrovani moderated by AFI Festivals Senior Programmer Ken Jacobson.

In this poetic and personal exploration, Iranian filmmaker Firouzeh Khosrovani uses photographs, letters, re-creations and archival footage to examine her parent’s marriage, which reflects the divide between traditionalism and modernization in the aftermath of the Iranian Revolution. Charting the course of the relationship from when her mother quite literally married a photograph of her father through correspondence passionately debating a series of disagreements on religion and secularism and arts and culture, it becomes clear that their ever-changing dynamic is inextricably entwined with larger political circumstances. With each representing opposite perspectives, curious disjunctions emerge in the in-between, upending the notion of devout religious practice as entirely oppressive in the context of a woman forming her identity independent of her husband. Amid the extremes, another unique, complex and insightful perspective emerges: daughter/filmmaker Khosrovani. –Malin Kan
