Following the screening, watch a special conversation with director/writer CJ Hunt and  producer Darcy McKinnon moderated by AFI Festivals Senior Programmer Ken Jacobson.

Comedian and satirist CJ Hunt (THE DAILY SHOW) is asking difficult questions about this country’s Confederate monuments, and there are no easy answers. In THE NEUTRAL GROUND, Hunt hopes to discover some clarity, by diving into history and interviewing family, politicians and everyday people — many who still support the side that lost the American Civil War. Starting in 2015, Hunt goes to New Orleans where the debate to remove such statues is getting heated. The monuments, being concrete examples of racial issues in this country, are understandably contentious. The next five years only throw more fuel on the fire, leading to a country more visibly divided than before the 2016 election. Hunt’s humor is skillfully disarming allowing for fruitful, albeit uncomfortable conversations – conversations that need to be had. –Eric Moore
