AFI DOCS Impact Lab

When armed with best methods and resources to advance social and political change, filmmakers are able to truly shape the world. With our democratic institutions currently under threat, there has never been a better time for filmmakers to learn from world-class advocates and campaign-tested changemakers at the 2019 AFI DOCS Impact Lab in Washington, DC.

“I have been to other labs, and this one was a standout for its immediacy, tangibility and the access it created for participants and tactics to reach more people.”

– 2018 Impact Lab Participant

The AFI DOCS Impact Lab, produced by AFI DOCS and Raben Impact Entertainment, is a competitive fellowship and two-day training program. Designed to empower and elevate filmmakers with original voices and issue-driven films, the Lab helps visual storytellers generate broader social impact and political change through the power of film.

The Lab provides fellows with unique training opportunities in the areas of advocacy, grassroots communications and engagement. In addition to exclusive training with some of the most sought-after tacticians in the social impact and political sphere, Lab fellows connect with policymakers and Congressional aides working on legislation relevant to their films.

The Lab is designed to bring together and empower both veteran and up-and-coming filmmakers alike from diverse backgrounds. Five films will be accepted into this year’s Impact Lab, with a total of 10 fellows representing both feature-length and short documentary films.
