TOM PETTY, SOMEWHERE YOU FEEL FREE Feature Films

TOM

Following the screening, watch a special conversation with director Mary Wharton and editor Mari Keiko Gonzalez moderated by AFI Festivals Director of Programming Sarah Harris.

Tom Petty’s death in 2017 from an accidental drug overdose shook music fans worldwide. Following his death, his family discovered a collection of 16mm footage shot during the creation of Petty’s solo album “Wildflowers.” Director Mary Wharton (JIMMY CARTER ROCK & ROLL PRESIDENT) uses these nostalgic moments with intimate interviews to weave together a love letter to Petty’s touchstone album and his personal struggle to feel free.

“I think I’m a soul singer because you have to connect with your soul in a way.” Petty’s words about his artistic approach during this time reverberate as enchanting and haunting. Indeed, “Wildflowers” continues to resonate with fans young and old today and TOM PETTY, SOMEWHERE YOU FEEL FREE is a beautiful, complimentary tribute to a scrappy and prolific artist. –Sarah Harris

Director Mary Wharton won the 2004 Grammy® Award for Best Music Film for her documentary feature SAM COOKE: LEGEND. Other notable feature film credits include JIMMY CARTER ROCK & ROLL PRESIDENT; JOAN BAEZ: HOW SWEET THE SOUND; the platinum-selling concert film PHISH: IT; and FARRAH FAWCETT FOREVER.
